W. H. O defines female genital mutilation as any procedure that intentionally alters or causes injury to the external female genital organs for non-medical reasons and describes four types of FGM. Which are;
Type 1: Clitoridectomy is partial or total removal of the clitoris and or in some cases only the prepuce which is the fold surrounding the clitoris.
Type 2: Excision, which is partial or total removal of the clitoris and the labia minora (the lips which surrounds the vagina).
Type 3: Infibulation, narrowing of the vagina opening through cutting of the labia minora, with or without removal of the clitoris.
Type 4: Others, all other harmful procedures to the female genitalia for non medical purposes, e. g pricking, piercing, incising, scraping and cauterizing the genital area.
Possible complications from FGM could be;
¶ Severe pain
¶ Sepsis and urinary retention.
While late complications can be sexual dysfunction with anorgasmia, keloid scar, dermoid cysts and psychological issues.
